People ask me why I spend time posting student work.
Why not?
First, students spend time making these assignments, it's a shame that they only present it to their class once and that only their classmates get to see it. This way, their work gets "more mileage"!
Second, I believe that each of my students should see the work of my other students. That way, they can judge their work for themselves. Most of the time, kids are satisfied with the minimum. Sometimes, those who do very well are already satisfied and don't strive to go further. By having access to the work students in other classes, they get a wider view of student work and as such (and hopefully!) will be motivated to do better!
Third, it teaches them how to critique each others work, as well as their work. I have had so many comments regarding grammar and spelling (yes, I think these kids, given the chance to mark the work of others, will be stricter that I am!) and suggestions on how to improve their site or video. This makes for a happy teacher because the students are now taking ownership of the project. They suggest improvements for others and make sure that their own is impeccable!
Yes, not all student work is at the level I would like it to be...BUT, it is certainly all above the level I don't want it to be! Some have mastered what is required and moved on to giving me more that what I expect from them. For other, it is still a work in progress BUT they are working. I can't tell you how happy I was to get amazing drug videos from students who never bothered to do anything before (you know who you are!), from students who went beyond the topic and made global links (you know who your are, too!), and from students who artistically presented their topic (yup, you know who you are, as well!)!
ALL IN ALL, I love my Y9 classes and if I could follow you and continue being your teacher, I would. It was a great pleasure for me to share with you my knowledge for one year and TO LEARN FROM YOU AS WELL... I am not perfect (ask 9C!), well, maybe 99% only...need to work on the 1%! (hahahahah :])
